West Virginia Delegates to the Democratic National Convention are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris with their vote to endorse their partyòòò½ÊÓƵ™s presumptive presidential nominee, following the decision on Sunday by President Joe Biden to step out of the race.
òòò½ÊÓƵœVice President Harris, as the first African American woman nominated by a major political party, will represent a historic milestone in American politics,òòò½ÊÓƵ stated a news release from the West Virginia Democratic Party. òòò½ÊÓƵœHer nomination will not only break barriers but also paves the way for a more inclusive and representative democracy.òòò½ÊÓƵ
DNC delegates react
The news release included several statements from state delegates to the DNC.
West Virginia Democratic Vice Chair Teresa Toriseva, of Wheeling, said:
òòò½ÊÓƵœVice President Harris has been a steadfast advocate for reproductive rights. In light of recent attacks on reproductive freedom, her commitment to safeguarding these rights is crucial. We need her leadership to ensure that every woman has the autonomy over her own body and the freedom to make her own health care decisions.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Toriseva is also the Democratic nominee for state attorney general.
Jean Evansmore, of Oak Hill, who the news release described as an African American woman and a lifelong advocate for civil rights, said:
òòò½ÊÓƵœAs someone who has witnessed the struggles and triumphs of the civil rights movement, seeing Vice President Harris as our nominee fills me with immense pride. Her leadership is what our nation needs to restore justice and equality.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Olivia Dowler, of Weirton, said:
òòò½ÊÓƵœDonald Trump represents an existential threat to our democracy. His divisive rhetoric and policies have undermined the very foundation of our nation. Vice President Harris is the leader we need to unite us and steer us towards a brighter future. As a new candidate, I am inspired by her vision and dedication.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Dowler is also a nominee for the House of Delegates.

Early Tuesday morning, Harris released a statement via X on securing the òòò½ÊÓƵœbroad supportòòò½ÊÓƵ needed to become the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.
Her statement read, in part, òòò½ÊÓƵœI am grateful to President Biden and everyone in the Democratic Party who has already put their faith in me.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Tonight, I am proud to have earned the support needed to become our partyòòò½ÊÓƵ™s nominee.
Over the next few months, I'll be traveling across the country talking to Americans about everything on the line. I fully intend to unite our party and our nation, and defeat Donald Trump.

Biden to address nation
On Sunday, shortly after announcing he would not seek reelection, Biden endorsed Harris. He is expected to address the nation from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. Wednesday, on òòò½ÊÓƵœwhat lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people,òòò½ÊÓƵ according to his statement on X posted on Tuesday.
