Marshall University (dark jerseys) plays Appalachian State for its homecoming game on Oct. 13, 1984, at Fairfield Stadium. Marshall won, 35-7. The team would go on to have a 6-5 record under coach Stan Parrish. Team captains were Rob Bowers and Tony Lellie.

From 1966 to 1983, Marshall's football program suffered a dismal streak of losing seasons. The 1983 record was 4-7, its best since 1976. In 1984, Marshall won its two final games on the road against Illinois State and East Tennessee State to finish with its first winning season in 20 years.
